SASFC has implemented a robust Girls and Women’s Pathway that takes a common sense, player-centred approach to developing the potential of our young female footballers
Girls born 2013 to 2016 can play with boys in mixed teams, or in a SASFC Girls-only Junior team
'Mixed' teams – boys and girls – are entered into the Winter Season Junior Football competition by default. However many girls choose to play in the Girls-only Junior Football competition, which has Saturday-morning leagues for girls born 2016 and older, playing against girls teams from other Christchurch clubs. Girls also train together mid-week at St Albans Park, either in our Junior Plus or Junior Development sessions.
Check out our Junior Player Pathway for full programme details
In SASFC Girls Junior Football our main goal is having fun!
Mainland Football run 'girls only' competitions at joint 9th & 10th Grade and 11th & 12th Grade age groups. We take a flexible approach to make sure everyone is allocated a team and competition that is right for them.
Preparation for the 2025 Winter Season begins February and March:
- Term 1 Girls Skill Training is the perfect pre-season practice and conditioning for girls returning to the game after the long summer break. Played every Wednesday at St Albans Park, we have sessions for Junior and Youth players.
- Open Training grading sessions are a chance for our coaches to check out players and to help us make sure we get players into the right teams. Open Training takes place end-February and early March and is invitation-only. If you played for us last season, or have just registered for your first winter season with SASFC, you will automatically receive an invitation for 2025 trials. See below for further details.
All pre-season sessions take place on St Albans Park, unless stated otherwise. You can head on over to our Registrations page right now to get signed up for your Term 1 Training Programme
Girls-only Junior Skill Training is available all-year-round

Girls born 2009 to 2012 can try out for a Ōtākaro FC Girls Youth team...
The expansion of Ōtākaro FC in 2024 to include Girls Football provides an entirely new option for our female SASFC Youth players to try out for a 14th or 16th Grade Girls team playing at the highest regional level.
As a founder member club, SASFC has embraced this wider collaboration as the best possible option for aspirational Girls Youth players on the east side of Christchurch. Trials take place mid-February and players should complete an Expression of Interest form with Ōtākaro FC as early as possible by clicking here.
...or play Girls Youth football with SASFC
SASFC enter teams in the Girls 14th Grade and 16th Grade Winter Season Girls Youth Competition, for all players who wish to continue playing under the SASFC badge.

Winter Season Registration information
You need to register early to be sure of a place on a SASFC Girls Football Winter Season team. If you are registering after 21 March 2025, you should contact us at the email address below to check available places.
Open Training trials take place place over two sessions at the end of February and early March and are invitation-only. If you played for us last season, or have already registered for the first time this season, you will automatically receive an invitation for 2025 trials.
Open Training is free and there is no obligation to sign up for the season
If you are not a returning player and would like to attend Open Training, please email your player's full name and date of birth to office@sasfootball.club with 'Open Training' in the subject line and we'll get an invitation out to you.
Players wishing to play for a 'Blue' team must attend both Open Training grading sessions, or contact us if you are unable to attend. For our 'Red', 'White' and 'Black' teams it's not essential that you attend both Open Training sessions, nor wait to hear back from us in order to sign up: once you have attended one Open Training, just go ahead and register for the Winter Season before 21 March to be sure of a place on a team.
An official playing shirt, available from the merchandise store, is the only piece of kit you must obtain via the club shop
Players provide their own playing kit. Returning players should use the kit they retained from last season. We stock a full range of quality playing gear, but players are welcome to source their shorts and socks elsewhere online, or from high street stores, as long as they closely conform to the colour and style displayed in the club shop. No stripes or additional colours, please!
New members, or returning players looking to replace their kit, will find all they need on the SAS Club Shop at Football Unlimited.
